Hyderabad Metro Rail’s Innovative Nirbhaya Commute for Women Commuters

Using public transportation in any cosmopolitan city is fraught with risks for men and women. However, the risk is higher for women commuters. This is the reason HMR is leaving no stone unturned to ensure safe and hassle-free travel for its women passengers.

After the shocking incident in Delhi, where a young lady was brutally attacked while travelling in a bus, HMR Managing Director, Mr. N.V.S. Reddy, came up with the concept of Nirbhaya Commute. This concept aims at empowering women commuters and ensuring their safety while using the services of Hyderabad Metro Rail.

HMR and Women Commuter Safety

HMR has put certain measures in place that ensure women commuters can use Hyderabad Metro Rail without fear or feeling threatened. Some of the measures to strengthen safety and security include:

  • Constant monitoring of coaches and stations with the help of CCTV cameras
  • Deployment of women police personnel at stations and in coaches
  • Creating awareness among women commuters on how they can safeguard themselves while commuting
  • Using social media platforms to bring about safety awareness and have a constant dialogue with public to spread the message of safety
  • Use social media to solicit suggestions from public on how to further improve safety for women and other commuters

HMR’s Commitment to Nirbhaya Commute

Hyderabad Metro Rail is aware of the vulnerability of its female commuters and is strongly committed to providing a safe and secure environment to women, who can use the metro. These measures will allow them to travel without feeling threatened or uncomfortable about their safety. This is the reason why HMR has adopted the concept of Nirbhaya Commute.

Women commuters can look forward to a carefree travel experience, without concerns about their personal safety. As a result, they will be able to enjoy the commute and appreciate the facilities that HMR has put into place for commuters.

Using HMR means Nirbhaya commute at all times!

Nirbhaya Commute – HMR’s Tribute to Women Commuters

India is still reeling under the outrageous attack on Nirbhaya, the victim of gang rape in Delhi. The public is still disgusted and horrified at the atrocity committed on that young girl, who was christened Nirbhaya by the media. As a tribute to her and all women of India, HMR MD, Mr. N.V.S. Reddy, came up with the idea of Nirbhaya Commute for female passengers of Hyderabad Metro Rail.

What is Nirbhaya Commute?

People are aware that travelling in any cosmopolitan city is not without risk, be it male or female commuters. However, it is the women commuters who are most vulnerable and face a higher risk. To ensure that women commuters can use Hyderabad Metro Rail without worrying abouttheir personal safety, HMR has adopted certain measures that will help women feel safe while using the metro.

• Non-stop monitoring of metro coaches and stations using CCTVs

• Separate ticket counters for women commuters

• Deployment of women police personnel across stations and in metro coaches

• Having a constant dialogue with public on how they can protect themselves while commuting

• Creating awareness among women commuters on how they can safeguard themselves while travelling on public transportation

• Using social media forums to engage public and get suggestions from them to further improve safety and security at HMR stations and on metro coaches

Nirbhaya Commute is about making women passengers feel safe and secure while using the services offered by HMR.

HMR Believes in Nirbhaya Commute

HMR is aware that women can be vulnerable while using the metro. That is why it has  undertaken measures to make metro coaches safe for women commuters. Nirbhaya Commute not only ensures women safety, it also empowers women to safeguard themselves. Through Nirbhaya Commute, HMR aims to make commuting a stress-free, carefree and enjoyable experience for women and this is one undertaking that HMR is strongly committed to.

Nirbhaya Commute on HMR – Where Women Commuters Can Travel Safely and Without Fear

24-07

A brainchild of HMR Managing Director, Mr. N.V.S. Reddy, Nirbhaya Commute is named after the brave heart from Delhi whose case shocked the nation in December 2012. With citizens across the country expressing their outrage over the incident, Hyderabad Metro Rail decided to come up with safety measures aimed specifically at women commuters.

Travel in any cosmopolitan city is not without certain risks. This mainly attributed to rise in crime rate due to increase in urban population. There are certain risks involved when using urban transportation system, particularly for women commuters. While even male commuters face certain amount of risk, the risk is higher for female commuters.

To ensure that women commuters can use the metro without fear, certain measures have been adopted by HMR.

  • 24-hour surveillance with the help of CCTVs
  • Women police personnel in coaches and stations
  • Separate ticket counters for women commuters
  • HMR intends to have continuous dialogue with commuters on measures to safeguard themselves
  • Using social media forums as an outreach platform to connect with public and impart knowledge about personal safety measures. These forums also will serve as a way to get suggestions from public on how HMR can improve travel safety for women and other commuters

HMR is strongly committed to Nirbhaya Commute and that is why it has taken steps to ensure that metro coaches and stations are safe for women commuters. Hyderabad Metro Rail understands that many women and young girls are supplementing their family income; and may not find it easy to step outdoors with confidence. Hence, by adopting Nirbhaya Commute, HMR is ensuring that travel on metro coaches is risk-free for these women.

The aim of Nirbhaya Commute is to empower women, who are major contributors to India’s economic growth. And, with HMR, women commuters can look forward to commuting without fear or feeling threatened.

World Environment Day

On the eve of Environment Day, MD, HMR Mr.NVS Reddy conducted a brain storming session with the engineers of L&T, HMR and the energy conservation and environmental experts working with the Metro project regarding the strategy of the Metro project to contribute to environmental improvement in Hyderabad city.  The experts have informed that Hyderabad Metro will reduce about 3.5 lakh tonnes of CO2 (carbon dioxide) and other pollutants from the atmosphere in the city in a year mainly due to containment of usage of personal vehicles, reduction in consumption of diesel and petrol, etc.

A study conducted by the Central Road Research Institute(CRRI)   revealed that Delhi Metro reduced 3 lakh tonnes of vehicular pollutants in 2011 and recovered the whole cost of the Delhi Metro project in 5 years in terms of it’s economic benefits (reduction in fuel consumption, savings in travel time, reduction in pollution levels, etc.).

Usage of regenerative technologies by which the power produced by the braking system of Metro coaches will be reused; efficient utilization of natural light in Metro stations, workshops and other buildings; usage of energy efficient electrical devices and solar energy form part of the Hyderabad Metro strategy to contribute to environmental improvement, which is as under:

  • Benchmarking Hyderabad Metro performance against world’s best Metros for environmental improvement.
  • Adoption of energy efficient technologies at design stage for optimum benefits.
  • Metro stations, workshops and other buildings to be constructed as green buildings with natural ventilation to reduce air-conditioning and lighting requirement.
  • Cantilever station design on only central pillars to avoid tunnel effect and lighting requirement.
  • Replacement of 20% cement by fly ash in concreting works to absorb the earth polluting fly ash and to reduce cement consumption.
  • Saving of about 50,000 litres of water per day by usage of curing compound instead of conventional daily water curing of the concrete pillars, station structures, etc.
  • Creation of about 500 water harvesting structures near Metro Rail stations, along Metro corridors and in depots and other buildings.
  • Reduction/containment of noise pollution generated by road vehicles through noise containing sophisticated Metro coaches, low vibration trackforms, resilient base plates, suspension systems, erection of noise barriers in sensitive zones, etc.
  • Large scale plantation along Metro corridors and in other parts of the city.

Mr.NVS Reddy and L&T Metro Rail MD Mr.VB Gadgil have indicated that they would strive to make the Hyderabad Metro one of the best Metros in the world in terms of energy efficiency and to reduce pollution levels in the city.

Save our mother planet

Our planet is indeed gasping for breath right now, our harmful pollutions is indeed choking her slowly and continues to stripped her with her ozone layer. I think it is about time to give our timely response to this alarming state of the only planet we live in, by doing our own share of protecting her with doing simple things that will surely stir big difference. For if not, we might be harming ourselves in the years ahead as well, for nature has its own destructive way of getting back at us humans, the signs of earth’s displeasure with inappropriate and harmful activities of humans are now seen and felt all across the globe like the global warming, climate change, acid rain, drought, flash floods and other forms of natural catastrophes. Here are some practical and small ways that could help our planet get a sigh of relief. Collective small efforts by those who are genuinely concerned with earth’s welfare will inevitably help her by great leap and bounds.

1. Don’t allow your children to free those colorful balloons in mid air. Teach your children not to release these balloons. For balloons that escaped the grasps of your children that will get into oceans and seas will be mistaken as yummy jellyfish by sea turtles. Sea turtles takes a lot of years to mature and unfortunately some of them got killed by eating balloon or plastic bags. Sea turtles are part of the delicate cycle and if their population is affected other species of marine creatures are also under threat.

2. Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. Make it a habit to reduce the things we need or we consume. Purchase only things that we only need and eat only what you can. Let us do our share not to be part of the problem or should I say part of the garbage problem. Reuse all the things that can still be repaired/fixed or those things that are still okay.

Recycle things to conserve our resources, collect old newspapers, books, magazines, used papers, bottles (plastic and glass), and any other things that you could sell in junkyards. There is money in garbage and at the same time we’re doing our part in recycling process.

3. Be kind to trees. As much as possible use forests products and timber very well with optimum efficiency. You may use the back of coupons, use pencils until it become as small as possible, and don’t play with matches. Try to get involved in tree planting in your local conservation program. This could be fun as trees can give us added oxygen, shades for people and a refuge to different insects and birds.
